Tasting this riesling giant is like standing at the foot of a Mayan pyramid and looking up. Enormous concentration on the rich and super-succulent palate that is frankly sweet but only medium-bodied. Great mandarin orange, mango and mangosteen fruit. What subtlety and mineral elegance in spite of the huge structure. You could drink it right now, but the aging potential is enormous. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
The 2022 L'Epicentre is like a citrus-charged essence of Riesling: sharp, unremitting and thrilling. The nose is redolent with lemon and framed with summer blossom with just the merest touch of pollen. The palate is sweet, intensely concentrated and spiky with spine-tingling, lemony acid. The purity is astonishing. This is racy, stiletto-like in its steely sharpness. The 2022 is a total and intense pleasure. (Luscious)
The 2022 L'Epicentre was sourced from old vines in the grand cru Schlossberg (with 45-year-old vines) and grand cru Wineck-Schlossberg (60-year-old vines), picked and vertically pressed for 24 hours on September 21. It opens with an intense and concentrated botrytis-scented bouquet of generously ripe and concentrated fruits. Rich and savory on the palate, this is a sweet but vital, finessed and stimulatingly saline Riesling with fine acidity and a long, linear, mouthwatering finish. With just 300 liters produced, it fermented in stainless steel for two months and was bottled with 8.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. 375-milliliter bottles. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024.
